Born of fire and storm, shadow-creatures, darkened with ash and soot, and a hunger as vast as the restless sea. Eldstorm is a Gothenburg-based duo with a musical background rooted in old-time country and blues. The band is comprised of musicians Elin Engberg and Hannah Shermis (also seen and heard in bands such as Det Blev Handgemäng and My Dear Companion). Having known each for years, they eventually bonded over a mutual love of the blues and started a duo together playing traditional piano blues music. They eventually expanded their repertoire to include old-time country tunes, also incorporating several new instruments such as the mountain dulcimer, finger-picking style guitar and the upright bass. The duo quickly became popular in several blues and country scenes across Europe under the name The Storm and The Fire, and since their onset in 2014 they have played countless swing- and blues dance events, jazz/blues clubs and festival venues. From the very beginning the band has drawn inspiration from the Appalachian sound, country-blues and work songs; learning covers of old classics and writing songs in the old-time style. They cite artists such as the Carter family, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Jean Ritchie och Big Mama Thornton as early influences. A growing need to compose music of their own kick-started the idea of releasing their first full-length album consisting entirely of original songs. Simultaneously the band ventured into new musical territories. Their debut album Permanent Soil has been a few years in the making, and is the result of a successful collaboration with blues musician and producer Christoffer Johansson, whose other works include producing records for Bror Gunnar Jansson and Svarta Stugan.
